Construction in Brazil - Key Trends and Opportunities to 2024

Construction in Brazil - Key Trends and Opportunities to 2024

Summary

GlobalData now expects Brazil’s construction industry to contract by 7.1% in 2020 and increase by 0.7% in 2021 before recovering to an annual average of 2.7% in the remaining of the forecast period. While the country continues to struggle to contain the number of COVID-19 cases, the impact of the pandemic on the construction industry has been less severe than in other major Latin American economies as nearly all building activities have been allowed to carry on since the start of the pandemic while government’s income transfers to support millions of poor households, which are due to expire at the end of 2020, helped prevent a worse outcome.

The latest figures from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) showed that the construction industry rose by 12.7% in the third quarter of 2020, following a decline of 8.6% in the previous quarter. However, on a year-on-year basis, the sector continued fall during Q3 2020 albeit at a weaker rate than in the period before; posting a year-on-year decline of -7.9% over the quarter, up from a downwardly revised -13.9% in Q2 2020.

The Construction Industry Survey published on November 24th by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) with support from the Brazilian Chamber of Construction Industry (CBIC) indicated that the level of activity in the construction sector continued to increase in October 2020 although the indicator measuring activity in the sector was slightly lower in October (50.7 points) than that seen in September (51.2 points), it remained above the 50-point line for the third consecutive month while the indicator measuring employment in construction rose by 1.2 points to reach 51.3 point in the same period, the sixth successive month of increase in the index. The indices vary between 0 and 100 and any value below 50 indicates a contraction.
